Polestar, a hybrid of Volvo and Geely, have been operating in the UK for a number of years (probably longer than you think) but became more influential in 2020 when they released their Polestar 2 executive liftback option to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and subsequently the BMW i4.

Further to this innovation, the group went on to release their 3 in 2024 (a mid-size SUV) and the 4 in 2024 (an SUV Coupe) before releasing their 5 in 2025 (the luxury sedan / saloon). While the group have been focused and targeted, they have not been without their controversy and critique, especially in 2024 when Volvo announced a share and support reduction.
While this seemed to some that the brand was struggling and was subject to difficulties, the Geely Holdings group continue to invest and became the main shareholder in the operation along with Li Shufu. As the UK seemed to falter on the BEV transition around 2024 / 2024, there were thoughts that combustion and hybridisation was perhaps our primary route moving forwards.
However, the UK’s retail and fleet markets continue to change and evolve along with global challenges and conflicts. So much so, we are now seeing more targeted headlines, like this one from GB News -“Electric vehicles set to dominate UK roads within decade as drivers move away from petrol and diesel”.

As noted in this report, the UK is heading to an electric car economy with over 50% of the vehicles expected to be EV by 2034. In under 10 years, we could see the volume of EVs outweigh the volume of combustion and hybrid vehicles.
Of course, there are more immediate challenges which need to be overcome to make this a reality, especially with the ZEV Mandate dictating the volume of zero-emission options being sold. Aspects like charging in the public network, charging without a dedicated driveway, vehicle improvements and financial incentives / disincentives will be relevant.
While the future can never be 100% certain, for brands like Polestar, having a climate and economy which is very much EV friendly only continues to further their investment, innovation and product delivery. Not unlike any other business, there are bills to pay and mouths to feed, so the manufacturers do need help and support at various levels to realise their ambitions.

In a more hospitable environment, a luxury EV specialist can continue to produce vehicles which meet the demands of the customer base. The Polestar 3, which is a luxury SUV “and it drives like a sports car” is a big part of this push to success. Having received more recent updates, the vehicle has technical innovations and aerodynamic design to elevate both the driving and interior experience.
With key aspects like the full-length panoramic roof, option electrochromic film, spacious and comfortable interior, rear aero wing and robust 800V architecture, this is still an incredible option to lease.
