The Electric Car Grant was released in July 2025 for all new EV cars being sold in the UK (subject to a long list of qualifications). While many of us in the electric car industry were shocked that this financial support was introduced, as opposed to measures in the used-EV or charging infrastructure sectors, we must proceed in-line with the Government measures.
Confusions aside, the underlying notion of the ECG is to ensure that zero-emission vehicles can be sold, or leased, at a competitive price and maintain the sales metrics also implored by the Government under the ZEV Mandate.
It was therefore no surprise that .gov has been proactively communicating some of the changes and developments via the ECG as they push the message “The Electric Car Grant will make owning an electric car cheaper, easier and a reality for thousands more people across the UK.”
Only recently (5 August 2025) the Government confirmed the first tranche of vehicles to receive the £1,500 ECG
As readers can see, there are just four Citroen models (listed below) which will benefit from the new grant:
The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, was at the helm of this announcement, confirming that these options will be the first benefactors of the new political measure. Indeed, she has also clarified that the discounts are automatically applied and that customers will not be required to complete any paperwork.
She also went on to say that more vehicles are expected to follow, as the Labour Government deliver their Plan for Change for UK consumers. This is to be done in conjunction with the £4.5 billion investment which is targeting other aspects such as EV infrastructure and home-grown manufacturing of vehicles and batteries.
Moving forwards, personal and business leasing customers will be able to ascertain the availability of the grant on any potential cars by heading to thr UK Gov website - As at 5 August 2025, the rules dictate that to be eligible for any grant a vehicle must:
Once the above has been achieved, the manufacturer will eb able to claim either a Band 1 grant (£3,750) or the Band 2 grant (£1,500). Looking at the page on 5 August 2025, there are no cars eligible for the higher ECG and just the Citroen models above qualifying for the lower ECG. However, this is still relatively early for the grant and we expect many more brands to follow.
Leapmotors have been at the forefront of grant news but not in the way that many of us envisaged. As a Chinese manufacturer, jointly owned by Stellantis, this company is headquartered in Hagzhou.
Stellantis have an agreement to allow the Leapmotor product to be exported and sold outside of China. Since 2024, the brand has been sold throughout Europe in countries like Belgium, France, Italy, Germany and the UK.
The new B10, a battery electric crossover, is also produced on their Leap 3.5 platform and will use their dedicated battery electric powertrains and 800V electrical architecture. As a result, the manufacturer would not qualify for some of the elements of the ECG provisions, which do look into aspects like the geographical location of battery / vehicle production in addition to the sustainability.
However, rather than wait for Government clarification, the Leapmotor brand have already announced their own £3,750 grant on all vehiclesTo be clear this is the Leapmotor UK group self-funding their own vehicles, like the C10 and T03 with additional support for the UK customers, personal and business, to enjoy.
To support their existing line-up, the Leapmotor team are now releasing a new SUV for delivery in the latter stages of 2025. While ordering opens across Europe from July 30th 2025, this will be slowly introduced from country to country. The exterior will feature sleek lines and a dynamic finish.
The interior is set to be bright and spacious, with the 14.6” floating touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and an open cabin. The responsive cockpit will feature 17 ADAS features to ensure a safe journey. In terms of options choose between:
