For a country now embroiled in the motor finance commission update further to the Supreme Court’s announcement last Friday (1 August 2025) and the FCA’s further update on Sunday (3 August 2025) it may be forgivable to miss another key update hitting all drivers who are, or over, 70 years old.
As you will see on the .gov website the DVLA are now asking UK drivers to renew their licence if they are 70+, or are turning 70 within the next 90 days. In summary, older drivers are going to be asked to renew their licence every 3 years, as opposed to the 10 years imposed on younger drivers.
While there is no need to take a new test or undertake any theory or practical examinations, there are still some key points to be aware of:
Drivers can use the online DVLA service to organise all of this. You simply need an email address, 3 year address history, National Insurance number and a valid UK passport number to sign up to the service. Whilst the licence is being renewed you can drive so long as your doctor approves your health, your application has been ongoing for less than one year, you are not disqualified and you have a valid licence.
Much of this is focused on a health declaration, with a view that any health or disability updates need to be reported on. Any significant changes may mean that your driving ability must be assessed. For help and support, the Age UK team have produced a helpful article on how drivers over 70 need to proceed in 2025 and beyond.
For e-car, this is an important part of our customer database and demographic, with many older customers turning towards battery electric vehicles as they recognise the inherent cost-savings and positive driving experiences.
For many retired drivers there is propensity to cover low mileage, often set at around 5,000 per annum and lower. Additionally, the type of driving tends to be smaller stop/start journeys in towns and villages, as opposed to longer motorway commutes.
These are perfect conditions for EVs and essentially this is where this new fuel type really shines. Also, because many older people have drives, or off road parking, this means that a car charger and the corresponding overnight tariff is available. For many petrol/diesel drivers, there is a recognition that the cost of fuelling is very much on the ascendency, as well as the cost of servicing and maintenance.
With dedicated EV tariffs offering sub 10 pence per kWh charging and minimal servicing obligations, this encourages more drivers over 70 to go green. And with a whole host of autonomous driving features and safety features, supporting older drivers is high on the agenda.
One such manufacturer looking to break into the older driver market is the Mercedes brand who are launching their all-new CLA Shooting Brake EV (or EQ Technology). Formally announced on 15 July 2025 and due to go on sale in Q4 2025, the more practical estate model will be hitting the UK roads early 2026. “A class of its own” the new CLA EV is aiming to bring sportiness and versatility but without the compromise.
With key details like the illuminated grille, seamless door handles and panoramic roof, this is set to be a true winner of 2026. Technology will be high on the agenda with the MBUX superscreen for an immersive digital driver experience along with improved UI throughout. As the Shooting Brake, the new CLA offers a spacious rear boot coupled with the electric boot lid and roof racks.
The assertive front with powerdomes and a sculpted rear enhances the aerodynamic profile of the CLA SB. However, it isn’t just the structure allowing for component range, with the dedicated electric architecture underpinning this car - the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture.
Features like the Burmester 3D surround, ambient light, MBUX intuitive user interface, MBUX Virtual Assistant and surround navigation supporting your digital journey. Not unlike the CLA saloon, the Electric Drive Unit is based on the 800V charging system for maximised performance and efficiency.
The car will arrive with the MB.CHARGE to help find suitable charge points throughout the UK. For more information, head to the Mercedes website.
