The excitement of 13 more EVs benefitting from the new Electric Car Grant (ECG) has not gone unnoticed. Since the announcement on Friday, and our ECG post on the Saturday, the news has literally been awash with news and media articles detailing the recent changes and adjustments, as brands like Renault, Vauxhall and Nissan join Citroen in the new endeavour.
Even the Government, via .Gov, announced the recent updates in one of their £650 million ECG posts. As their piece mentions, all of the vehicles will receive the Band 2 ECG, which means that the manufacturer (and hopefully the customer) will enjoy a further £1500 reduction in the vehicle price.
In an effort to boost EV sales further, and to assist the working people of Britain, the grant is making more electric car options affordable for those consumers and small businesses who need that support. With vehicles like the Renault 5, Nissan Micra and Vauxhall Mokka on the list, these really are the types of cars which everyday people of the UK need assistance with. But what else do BEV drivers need to know?
As we see more and more exciting car launches, like the recent MG SUV - the MG IM6 - the potential to have a functional and practical zero-emission option increases. Before we preview some of the pros and cons of the new MG IM6, it is worth just referencing the running costs and fuelling of this vehicle.
While acquisition and purchase prices are often at the heart of the debates, there is more to vehicle ownership and usership than this. By this we mean the Whole of Life costs needs to be reviewed; insurance, service and maintenance, tyres and fuel.
All of these facets combine to essentially dictate the affordability of any new or used vehicle. The fuel, or electricity costs, are something which need to be more carefully analysed with any EV. Often headlines will say “fuel from as little as £5” without any real context or detail, which is not fair.
For the benefit of this blog, we will use the new IM6 as the example for running costs. With a usable battery of 96.5 kWh this is effectively setting out to you how much electricity, or energy, you need to fuel this vehicle. In doing so, this makes the cost of any charging session very easy to predict and calculate.
But don’t worry, our incredible e-car lease website has a handy tool, the Full Charge Cost, that allows you to quickly establish this. In addition, our EVC™ will set out a cost for charging on an overnight tariff, standard domestic tariff and on the public network using a rough average. To set this out to you, please see the charging costs on the new IM6 in cheapest to largest:
The truth on the fuelling costs for any electric vehicle is that it will depend on your situation. For those personal or business lease customers with off-road parking / a drive, having a car charger on their domestic premises is clearly the ideal route.
Not only is this naturally convenient, this makes it possible to benefit from a dedicated EV tariff from one of the UK’s leading energy companies. With more all-electric vehicles on UK roads, a more competitive charging tariff environment has evolved. While rates will vary, this hovers around 8 pence per kWh. While you can charge at home without a tariff, the cost is over 3 times greater.
This is why customer education at the point of sale is so crucial, as this ignorance could be potentially frustrating. In the same way, understanding the public network for charging your IM6 is key too. If you use rapid chargers more commonly, especially if you are a high-mileage driver, then you need to factor into this the session cost. As rapid chargers are expensive to install, and are subject to VAT, this convenient method attracts a cost which is passed to the customer. As noted above, this is 10 times more expensive that the dedicated tariff route! This is why upfront conversations and information remain integral.
