The headlines often concentrate on the new car industry in the UK but, as the residual value fall outs in 2023 / 2024 illustrated, what happens to our new electric lease cars after contracts end are important.

While there was considerable reaction to the RV of a BEV after a 3 / 4 year lease, the impact of COVID had very much distorted the issue. Because of microchip and vehicle shortages post-2020, the buoyancy of the combustion market made for great returns for those in disposal.

The contrast with the 1st generation of EVs was maybe a big shock. Market knowledge and maturity as we move through 2026 is creating a different environment for used EVs, with recent reports in July 2026, like the overview from AM Online  and Fleet News show.

The interest in used electric options is increasing, with AM Online reporting on independent dealers now more closely aligned and intrigued by the opportunity. Using data from the G3 Vehicle Auctions, the dealer purchases rose by 44% year on year in Q1 2026, with overall volume of EVs for sale up by 37% year on year.

Some of the key takeaways include the significant interest in sub £10,000 Tesla Model 3 options with over 100,000 miles on the clock and even 5 to 10 years old Renault Zoe options.

Moving further, the report identified how in Q2 the increasing choices in the market, as well as increasing conversion by dealers is creating a more ambient market, with further positivity expected in Q3 and Q4 of 2026.

In Fleet News, the “tipping point” has been noted, with values of electric cars, along with customer confidence, now almost beyond demand according to the Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA). Increasing petrol and diesel costs, coinciding with vehicle choice and user-experience, is making a significant impact.

With a full service history and robust battery health checks / certificates, the feeling is one of optimism for 2 – 4-year-old electric vehicles. While some businesses are still cautious from the RV collapses of 2023 / 2024, the suggestions are that our used market in the UK is about to get a whole lot more green for 2026 and beyond.

For a brand like Polestar, which is an all-electric car maker, having a comfortable platform to sell their options is key. No confidence? No sale. The manufacturers are a self-fuelling fire, with vehicle reliability and customer service now crucial to the used market adopting their products and therefore supporting residual values at auction.

The better the RV, the better the margins for the manufacturers, which is something often ignored and replaced simply with the theory of heavy front-end discounts and fire sales to build volume. This isn’t healthy or sustainable for the manufacturer or the finance company. The Polestar 4, which is an existing model, is now undergoing change with the brand electing to split this out between two options:

•  Polestar 4 Coupe; and
•  Polestar 4 SUV

As noted in the recent Polestar publication the SUV will begin sales on 2 September 2026 for Europe, with the existing coupe already on sale now (July 2026). The decision to go into the SUV was for added flexibility and practicality for customers, with more versatile storage and strong aesthetics on top of the coupe. The SUV will be manufactured in South Korea (Busan), with both a RWD and AWD model on the 400V architecture to follow.

As you can ascertain from the Polestar website the coupe is very much about aerodynamics, electric innovation and SUV spaciousness.

Adopting the 400V battery architecture, with 200kW DC charging, the coupe will utilise the ambience of the wrap-around interior, comfort functionality, electric front and rear seats plus a host of bespoke features and configurations to make the vehicle your own.

Inspired by the solar system the interior will use interior illumination to form light lines orbiting the cabin with the Google built-in digital functionality ensuring this is a driver ecosystem. Using the “Hey Google” introduction, a driver can quickly get the conversation started. With RVs in mind, the Polestar team are giving some key back-up on their new cars including:

•  3-year vehicle warranty, or 60,000 miles, regardless of vehicle ownership
•  8 year battery warranty, or 100,000 miles, regardless of vehicle ownership
•  12-year corrosion warranty

•  OTA updates along with 1 year free of connected services plus
•  Roadside assistance for 3 years from the date of registration  

So what options are available?

As at July 2026 you can configure your bespoke option on the Polestar website and this includes;

•  Rear Motor – from £56,750; and
•  Dual Motor – from £63,750. 

Both options  include key features like 20” Aero wheels, dynamic chassis, heated/folding/adjustable door mirrors, active LED headlights, daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, UV and noise reducing glass, 8-way adjustable driver seat, heated front seats, preconditioning.

CleanZone air filtration, wireless device charging, heat pump, 10” driver display, 15.4” centre display, high-performance audio, NFC key card, Animal Mode, 12 ultrasonic sensors, HD vehicle cameras around the vehicle and full ADAS.

Key colours include Magnesium Silver, Electron Blue, Storm Grey, Space Black and Snow White. The Business Pack is standard currently (with Pilot Assist, Park assist and privacy glass) but there are optional packs like the Prime pack (Harmon Kardon, Pixel LED headlights, 12-way adjustable seats, heated rear seats.

PM 2.5 air filtration) and Performance Pack (22” performance, Polestar Engineered chassis, Swedish gold embellishments and the bio-attributed MicroTech). Other options include the electrochromic glass roof and fully electrically retractable towbar.

How does the standard Long Range Dual Motor perform?

•  Polestar 4 Coupé Rear Motor - this RWD SUV will have a 94 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.1 seconds, 124 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 260 miles with warmer weather allowing for 350 miles – 305 miles combined. On charging, the 11kW AC max will allow 10 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 200 kW DC maximum allowing 31 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 526L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 131 mpg. This option can tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1500kg (braked). This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. The heat pump is a standard option; and  

•  Polestar 4 Coupé Dual Motor - This AWD SUV will have a 94 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.8 seconds, 124 mph top speeds and 400 kW (or 536 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 255 miles with warmer weather allowing for 340 miles. On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 200 kW DC maximum allowing 31 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 526L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 129 mpg. This option can tow 750kg (unbraked) and 2000kg (braked). This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. The heat pump is a standard option.
