Like their sister-company, Kia, the Hyundai car group have developed a phenomenal reputation for quality and value over the last 10 years in the UK. In particular, their SUV offering via the Tuscon and Santa Fe have become staple family cars. With a key focus on crossover and 4×4 style vehicles in the UK, it is no surprise that Hyundai have entered the alternative fuel world with the Kona, a small SUV/crossover option. Available in combustion format, hybrid and pure electric, Hyundai have produced a like-for-like equivalent to the Kia e-Niro. It is unsurprising the Kona received the WhatCar? Technology award for 2019.
So what do Hyundai say about their new electric vehicle? The group ambitiously believe they have produced a no-comprise vehicle; one which is both aesthetically pleasing coupled with an honest practicality. Not only that, they truly believe in the reliability of their product (often a concern for new EV drivers) – a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, 5 year roadside assistance and 5 annual vehicle health checks comes standard with the new Kona EV (based on the 64 kWh battery).
So what performance do you get from a Kona? The 64kWh lithium-ion battery produces a WLTP electric range of 279 miles on a full charge, 204ps and 0-62 times of 7.9 seconds (plus top speeds of 104mph). Service intervals are set at every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever lands sooner. In terms of charge times, the TYPE 2 charge port allows charge power of nearly 11kW AC; this take circa 7 hours for a full charge. A standard 7kW home charge point will take just under 10 hours for 0-100%. The CCS fast charge port will see a 50 kW DC allow 0-80% charging in just over 75 minutes. The maximum fast charge power is just over 75 kW.
The Kona is available in two formats – 1) a Premium (£38,526.00 P11d); and 2) a Premium SE (a £40,846.00 P11d). The Premium provides some great standard features including 17” alloy wheels, climate control, automatic dimming rear view mirror, LED daytime running lights, privacy glass, parking sensors (front/rear), keyless entry, Bluetooth, KRELL premium Audio and a 10.25” screen with navigation. If you upgrade to the “SE” for electric seat adjustment, heated and ventilated seats, leather upholstery, high beam assistant, head up display and heated steering wheel.
So will the Kona be your next electric SUV?
