Leasing a GWM ORA 03 Electric in the UK

Affordable and cost-effective electric cars are now a priority for the UK in order to secure an effective transition to zero-emission driving. This is even more important now that the Government have confirmed the ZEV Mandate, legislating that manufacturers must produce and sell a certain percentage of zero-emission vehicles.

By 2030, this will be 80% for all manufacturers. However, it does need to be highlighted that many BEVs are priced above and beyond £40,000, which for many leasing customers (particularly personal) can be price obstructive. Yes, there are company car tax savings and Whole of Life cost benefits in utilising a battery but for some, particularly smaller businesses and retail consumers, there does need to be smaller and cheaper EVs to lease or buy.

The Great Wall Motors introduced the “Funky Cat” to the UK back in November 2022, aiming this to be one of the UK’s answers to cheaper electric transport and the group’s leading tagline “meet your future friend” seemed to do just that.

Great Wall were founded in 1984, so they are anything other than a new start, and have found immense success in the Asian region. They are a top 5 plug-in manufacturer in China, which is praise indeed with much of the best lithium-ion solutions originating from the Chinese region. And while the Funky Cat has been relatively successful across European markets, as many EVs do erode the notion of badge and image, the group did make a subtle change towards the end of 2023.

For January 2024, the cheap hatchback will now be known as the “Ora 03” as part of a new brand direction in the UK. Further models from GWM will follow this branding approach too. As the GWM manufacturer website sets out UK customers can choose between:

  •  Pure+ - from £31,995 this model includes a 10.25” infotainment and instrument cluster, navigation, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, reversing camera, 360 camera, high beam assist, keyless entry and start, LED headlights, wireless charging, rear parking sensors, auto dimming mirror; and
  •  Pro+ - from £34,995 this model adds heated and massaging seats, auto reversing, auto parking assist and front parking sensors.

But about the 03’s performance and battery – does it have a robust range / charging time?

  •  Pure+ - with a 47.8 kWh lithium-ion battery this will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.3 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 126 kW (or 169 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 145 miles with warmer weather allowing for 195 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the moderate 64 kW DC maximum allowing 47 minute 10 – 80% times. Boot capacity, with seats up, is stated to be 228L and 858L with the seats down. There will be no towing available with this EV; and
  •  Pro+ - with a 59.3 kWh lithium-ion battery this will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.2 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 126 kW (or 169 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 175 miles with warmer weather allowing for 240 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 6 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the moderate 64 kW DC maximum allowing 58 minute 10 – 80% times. Boot capacity, with seats up, is stated to be 228L and 858L with the seats down. There will be no towing available with this EV.

How much is a GWM ORA 03 Electric to lease?
The Pure+ will be just under £32,000, making this one of the cheapest electric cars to buy or lease in the UK. With more models due to Europe, this price may become a little lower if more basic options make their way into production or if the market becomes competitive. Expect leasing deals to be around £200 - £300 per month, mileage, term and initial rental / deposit dependent

Is a GWM ORA 03 a good car to lease?
As the EV has been in production for some time in China, UK customer can be assured that this is not a new product which has not been tried and tested. And the UK automotive websites and publications have also been receiving this warmly with measured scores of 4/5 from Autocar, 4/5 from Auto Express, 3.6/5 from Parkers and 7/10 from TopGear. Many of the tests do promote this as a credible small EV to use – responsive, comfortable but with a robust specification / tech. The only major drawback is the rapid charging capability, which at sub-100 kW, make this underwhelming for a modern BEV

Is a GWM ORA 03 Electric lease right for me or the business?
The move towards an EV is not without some concern or query for many first-time leasing customers. While the price tag of the 03 is likely to be attractive, the suitability of the finance product (contract hire) and the product (the car) does need exploration. With contract hire, this is a usership product based on rentals over a fixed term; you cannot buy the vehicle and charges will apply to return it before contract cessation. In addition, in using our “living with your ...” tools to ascertain the range, charging speeds, full charge costs and company car tax. We do focus on providing solutions which are suitable for our customer’s needs and requirements.
