This week (8 September 2025) has been an incredibly busy one, with BMW and Mercedes both launching their new mid-size SUVs ready for March 2026.
As we have been touching upon, a lot of what we are seeing from the German electric car manufacturers is a direct response to the growing Chinese threat, which has seen a swathe of great value EVs become available, with some incredible technology and battery robustness.
However, with the conjecture suggesting that these competing forces would perhaps have a terminal impact, this hasn’t exactly transpired this way. While there are some positive stats for the newer manufacturers, there is still obvious loyalty to the integral brands in the luxury car market - Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche.
With Polestar, the Geely-backed EV company, having just launched their new performance GT (saloon) this week, there is no doubt that the competition is not ceding. While this is increasing the standards of brands within the new car industry, it is also having a positive impact on the used-EV industry too.
Hidden away in the background are hundreds of thousands of zero-emission options currently on lease, or with customers, and which are coming to car supermarkets and auctions across the UK. In the last 2 years, there has been a more considered effort to help bring about customer confidence, so that personal and business leasing customers can continue to bolster new car residuals by adopting an ex-lease or used EV.
The primary issue historically was that the new cars were raising eyebrows on suitability with regards to charging and range, so this was being conveyed to customers in the used sector. With a fear of ageing technology and rapid depreciation, this created significant issues in update and adaption.
But over time the improving technological and battery faculties created a more harmonious feeling on what was possible with a battery car; the ability to travel 200 miles+ and charge 10-80% in around 30/40 mins changed our mindset in the UK.
However, the turn of 2025 has created an almost secondary revolution in what is possible with our battery vehicles. The BMW iX3 at nearly 400 miles range, the GLC EQ Tech with 330kW DC allowing for 20 minute sessions and the MG IM5 at 355 miles range / 369kW DC charging for 17 minute sessions are perfect examples.
These types of capabilities are making the lifestyle so seamless that it is almost more convenient to transition to an electric car than to remain in a combustion one. For those UK drivers awaiting the 2 - 5 year old vehicle, this is music to their ears.
Effectively their next fleet or retail solution will harness some incredible functionality and performance to ensure they have a positive experience. With pricing now aligning more to customer expectations, there is a swell in belief for used-EV solutions. Without a doubt, the used electric car leasing market is seeing greater improvement in enquiries and receptiveness to these solutions. With contract hire (the ability to use and return the vehicle) now very much the primary route, there is a noticeable ease with much of our personal, business and salary sacrifice transactions.
