The electric car industry is awash with news, views and updates so far this month and we are only just half way through! As we start 16 October 2025, today’s big news is that the VW ID4 and the VW ID5 will now be eligible for the UK grants.
As per the UK gov website the two premium SUVs from the VW Group will be enjoying the support of the UK’s Government. To help reach the 80% target of 2030, manufacturers are being offered financial support to help make their new vehicles more affordable for retail and fleet customers.

In order to qualify for the grant, the vehicle must be an M1 passenger vehicle (a car), produce zero-emissions from the tailpipe, have a minimum WLTP range of 100 miles, include a 3-year / 60,000 mile vehicle warranty, include an 8-year / 100,000 battery warranty and have a price of £37,000 or below.
If the vehicle qualifies, it will either receive a Band 1 grant of £3750 or Band 2 grant of £1,500. At present only two vehicles receive the upper-echelon grant (the Ford Puma Gen-E and the E-Tourneo Courier) and now a robust list of cars, from Citroen to Nissan to Skoda are benefitting from the lower grant. With no plans to amend or remove, the success of the Electric Car Grant will be monitored closely.
The ID4 and ID5 SUV options are now showing as ECG applicable on the Volkswagen manufacturer website . However, not every vehicle will get the benefit with the Pure Essential, Pure Match and Pro Essential identified as the recipients. As per the website there are conditions - Only available where final purchase price is less than £42,000 (including options & any discounts offered by your retailer) - so do make sure you research this before committing to your vehicle.

Even though both the 52kWh and 77kWh are receiving this reduction, the more popular Pro Match and GTX editions do not qualify as they exceed the maximum price. That being said, for the Pure Essential to now start below £37,000 is a strong testament to EV affordability, with this Tiguan alternative now essentially affordable to many personal or business leasing customers.
